Sallyann Baldry is an independent consultant specialising in apprenticeships. Her particular expertise is around the end point assessment of apprenticeships, but she also provides consultancy for levy paying companies to identify and introduce apprenticeships. In August she was nominated as an Inspiring Woman in Apprenticeships and in October 2019 joined the Gender Equality Collective as an ambassador.

The gender gap in apprenticeships

Participation rates in apprenticeships are running pretty much 50/50 for men and women. Ostensibly, it appears that apprenticeships are a success story for equality. Indeed, for the last ten years participation has slightly tipped in favour of women; but this year, for the first time, more men started on apprenticeships than women. What does this tweak in the statistics tell us about how apprenticeships are evolving?
