Build it – but they won’t necessarily come.

I love ‘Field of Dreams’. For those of you that don’t know the film, Kevin Costner plays Ray, an Iowa farmer who hears a mysterious voice in his cornfield saying, "If you build it, he will come." He interprets this as an instruction to build a baseball diamond (what else?) and, once it’s complete, he is visited by the ghosts of the 1919 Chicago White Sox. If you haven’t watched it, don’t let this synopsis put you off – it really is a brilliant film.

Barnwood Park School in Gloucester were seeking a new, easy-to-use resource that could assist with their day-to-day administrative tasks. Thankfully, it was at a local meeting of school business managers that a solution was found.

Coding has been around for a while now, yet how far have we really come in terms of teaching and learning? There still appears to be a certain nervousness among teachers when incorporating it into lessons, perhaps stemming from a lack of knowledge, skills or resources. Despite this, with a little time and practise, coding can be quite an easy task to weave into classroom activities. So let’s explore how teachers can get to grips with coding in the classroom, regardless of experience or the subjects that are taught.

When James McAleese joined Mount Grace School as assistant head in 2015, his challenge was to embed digital learning across the school. Having regularly used GCSEPod at his previous school, he knew that the resource could play a huge part in the digital transformation of the school.

To kick off the new school year, Manchester Metropolitan University’s Faculty of Education and Emile Education are hosting an evening to discuss how UK schools can best innovate Computing. Pro-vice chancellor Professor Richard Greene and Emile director Glen Jones are specifically keen for “as many teachers from Innovate My School’s community to attend as possible.” The evening of inspiration will take place on Thursday the 28th September, and tickets are available free-of-charge to teachers and school leaders.

Managing a whole-school reward programme can be incredibly complicated and time-consuming. Many teachers have to waste their valuable time keeping track of rewards given, filling in complicated excel spreadsheets, calculating class scores, subject scores and house points.

Primary school ICT can be a tricky subject for some teachers. For those who aren’t completely au fait with the technology themselves, it can be difficult to integrate new concepts and ideas into their lesson plans. Computers and tablets are always being upgraded to include new features and software, which can make staying up to date difficult.

Bett Awards partners i2i Events Group and BESA (The British Educational Suppliers Association) have announced the launch of the education sector’s 20th annual Bett Awards. This ceremony brings together developers, suppliers and educational practitioners each year to recognise, reward and celebrate ICT excellence in the education sector. The 2017 awards introduce three new categories: ‘Best Education Support Resource for Parents/Home Learning’, ‘Edtech Start-up company of the Year’ and ‘Higher Education Digital Services'.
