Modern teachers are faced with large class sizes where students have a very wide range of abilities and styles of learning. As any teacher can tell you, it's hard to deliver tailored support when workloads are high and you are tasked with teaching 30 students at a time. This presents a challenge for schools: how can they ensure that each student is receiving the support they require within the framework of classroom teaching?

I am entering into my 11th year teaching. Looking back on my journey, it is clear to me that my fascination with technology and its role in the classroom has been the most transformative element of my teaching career. Embracing new tech tools and dreaming up ways to effectively implement them in the classroom has been a truly creative outlet for me, and one that has pushed me to be innovative, thoughtful, and intentional in all that I do and create.

In the digital age, it is a challenge for teachers to ensure that their lessons keep up with the increasingly creative and vibrant media-led society in which we live, as well as to ensure that students are kept engaged in their education. It is even more important to engage students at a young age, so as to engender a love of learning early in life.

For many years, methods of teaching remained the same: students reading from textbooks, writing notes to process information, and gaining all the key knowledge needed for the world around them. The boom in technology at the turn of the millennium, however, saw traditional methods of teaching become overshadowed by new devices and software packages that revolutionised the learning landscape. The focus is now on creating a 21st Century education. With this in mind, in this school year should we be ignoring traditional methods of learning altogether, or actually integrating these with technology?

Given all of the research on retrieval practice and spacing, I knew I wanted to continually review previously learned concepts with my Math 2b class. At the same time, I was stressed to cover all course content in the given term, and the students were always asking for more small group instruction. I have been looking for ways to solve all of these needs by integrating technology in an effective way.

Millions of pupils around the world enjoy BrainPOP’s animated videos every day, building their knowledge and understanding. A well made video can capture a pupil’s attention and deliver effective learning in a few minutes. And making animations to introduce curriculum concepts is something we’ve worked hard at perfecting over the years.

A west London school has energised their Science lessons by using an interactive textbook. The Heathland School in Hounslow has begun using IntoScience, an immersive and highly engaging interactive 3D environment which brings the theory of science to life. It is aimed particularly at pupils aged 12-16 (KS3-4) and covers all fields of the subject. IntoScience was developed by Mathletics creators 3P Learning.

If you’re reading this article, it’s likely that you’re at least a bit techy. You might be a newbie in your first or second year of teaching: a newbie who wants to learn from other like-minded educators all over the world. Or maybe you’re a knowledgable teacher: you’re at the top of your game in many ways, but your New Year’s resolution is to take on new challenges—ones that will step up your teaching. Or perhaps you’re several years into your career: you’re an excellent teacher who is committed to lifelong learning.

After the anticipated arrival of beacons into the (almost) mainstream the education world has a genuine opportunity to consider how in our modern age we can benefit from proximity-enabled learning solutions. Recent technical advances claim to give us the opportunity to enhance learning and collaboration, through on target content distribution that supports students by providing content that can enhance their learning journey through triggers, based on time, location and the students profile.
