They wanted to create an outdoor space that would encourage free flow play that linked with their Early Years Curriculum throughout the school year - whatever the weather. Our team designed a play space that has inspired and motivated their younger children to take part in more active, outdoor play.
Mrs Nicola Masters, Head of Early Years and KS1, Akeley Wood School.
“It’s been amazing to see the Early Years children engaged in their play and eager to get outside in all weathers,” said Nicola Masters, head of Early Years and KS1 at Akeley Wood. “They don’t need any motivation to get outside and active, even if it’s raining. They take care of their new environment and are proud of their new equipment. They are really enjoying playing in the learning zones, it’s a very easy transition to take learning outside. The children love the bike tracks, it’s great to see them so excited about exercise.”
We worked closely with the school, and its pupils, to find out exactly what they wanted. Getting the children involved in the design process inspired everyone and gave the children a sense of pride and ownership that has led to them taking great care of the new space. The new Early Years playground is now being used by all of the younger children in the school for free flow play. They can move easily between the classroom and the playground whilst supporting the Early Years Curriculum. Incorporating an outdoor shelter in the design has allowed this free flow play to take place during rain or shine, meaning that outdoor play and learning can be embedded into the Curriculum throughout the school year.
Throughout the installation we offered the school advice on curriculum links, playground maintenance and raising money for their project. Our local consultant, Neil, was on hand to provide suggestions, answer questions and share his experience working on lots of similar projects. He ensured that the school were involved in all aspects of the process.
Nicola added: “We’ve had a very good experience working with them [Playforce] and can’t wait to see what the future of our playground holds.”
