ROBOLAB-online is a web-based service providing simulations and lesson plans for pupils and teachers who are learning about control systems as part of an ICT module.
ROBOLAB-online is easy-to-use and is a cost-effective means of introducing children to the ROBOLAB programming environment for the LEGO® ROBOLAB MINDSTORMS® Robotics Invention System. It comprises 2D simulations of an RCX 'buggy' in a virtual environment. The simulations are ideally suited for younger children from Year 1 to Year 6 (ages 4 to 11) as they are simple to learn.
ROBOLAB-online provides teaching materials that allow the students to progress from ROBOLAB Pilot Level 1 to Level 4 using sets of exercises and challenges of graded difficulty.
ROBOLAB-online has over a dozen simulations from line followers to more complex fairground ride and dancing buggy simulators which use touch and light sensors. Pupils can readily apply the skills that they develop to the programming of real LEGO® MINDSTORMS® RCX robots.
The complete system is online so it is more cost effective and convenient than buying whole class sets of LEGO ROBOLAB RCX bricks and as an unlimited number of students are able to log into the ROBOLAB-online system at any time; this means that no students are excluded and all can easily progress together.
It is also possible for students to alternate between the online simulations and working with the RCX robots if available.

Children enjoy working in its virtual environment and can readily grasp the key features of the ROBOLAB programming environment. This also fulfils the Controls and Systems section of the ICT module.
The complete system is online and is more cost effective than buying whole class sets of LEGO ROBOLAB RCX bricks.
Helpful for teachers as they do not have to rely on physical equipment it is entirely online. An unlimited number of students are able to log into the ROBOLAB-online system at any time; this means that no students are excluded and all can easily progress together.
