Education company EVERFI has launched four free digital courses in the UK, with more to come in the months ahead. All courses are linked to national curricula and have already achieved huge success in the US, with 2.8 million students having completed an EVERFI course in the last year alone.

The courses teach young people life skills, such as how to manage their future finances, how to explore careers in science, technology, engineering and maths, how to practise compassion, and how to stay safe online.

These resources use interactive games and real-life scenarios played out by cartoon characters to engage pupils of all abilities. All the courses are written and developed by subject specialists, have been tested and reviewed by UK teachers are based on robust evidence.

The courses we have now launched are:

  • Vault, a widely-acclaimed financial education course for 9 to 11 year olds.
  • The Compassion Project, the first course of its kind in the UK that teaches compassion to 7 to 11 year olds.
  • Ignition, a free online safety course for 11 to 14 year olds.
  • Endeavour, which provides interactive content to allow students aged between 11 to 14 to explore careers and develop core STEM skills.

The courses help create a more equal society by providing pupils with life skills that prepare them for a brighter, happier, safer and more resilient future and raise their aspirations. They are free for all UK schools, and at no point will schools or teachers have to pay for any part of them.

Vault

Vault teaches nine to 11-year-olds how to make smart financial decisions and the basics of budgeting. Pupils learn how to distinguish between their needs and wants, are taught what a payslip looks like and how interest can make our savings grow.

As part of the course, children play a budgeting game with the characters who are saving for short-term, medium-term and long-term goals. They learn how to be critical consumers by helping one character choose the best hoverbike to buy and the best value fuel to keep it moving.

The course has been accredited with Young Enterprise’s prestigious Financial Education Quality Mark, having been adapted for the UK after becoming a success story in the US. It has reached more than 340,000 children in the US and Canada.

The Compassion Project

The Compassion Project is available to all UK schools and designed for 7 to 11-year-olds. The course uses real-life scenarios and role play to help young people understand how to practise compassion and introduces students to core social emotional learning competencies, how to practice compassion and empathy, identify emotions, and exercise a growth mindset. It’s already been a runaway success in the US, reaching about 20% of all Primary schools there.

The course was originally the brainchild of LinkedIn chairman Jeff Weiner, who has said: “I’m not sure that I can think of anything more important than teaching compassion. The benefits are myriad in terms of … improving [children’s] sense of self, their self-esteem and the way they relate to others.”

The course has been adapted from a US version, which has already reached about 20% of all primary schools in the States.

It helps pupils understand how to evaluate the accuracy and perspectives of online content and supports them to safely and confidently navigate the digital world, with consideration for themselves and others.

The course also introduces students to modern digital health concepts such as digital emotional intelligence, digital dependency, online privacy, and evaluating content for accuracy and perspective.

Ignition is a free online safety course that has been widely acclaimed in the US and Canada and has now been adapted for the UK market. The course has been widely acclaimed in the US and Canada. More than 3.5 million pupils have taken Ignition since 2010.

Endeavour

Endeavour teaches 11 to 14-year-olds about the huge range of career opportunities within science, technology, engineering and maths. It gives real-world examples of STEM careers and is designed to appeal to those who are less confident in these subjects, as well as those who may already be considering a career in a STEM subject.

Pupils complete an interactive self- assessment where they dig deeper into their interests, skills, and aptitudes. Based on this, they are shown several career opportunities.

Pupils are asked to think about the home of the future and to act as engineers at a music software company, analysing content and user data to create a ‘perfect playlist’.The course shows how critical STEM subjects are in our lives, for example in the fields of fashion, technology and music.

The course has been widely acclaimed in the US and Canada, with more than half a million pupils taking the course over the past three years.
