First World Values Day celebrated with global story-writing competition

Human Values Foundation

The Human Values Foundation is a leading supplier of practical teaching materials that help schools embed a progressively stimulating values-based culture. Since 1995 it has been providing transformative, holistic, cross-curricular programmes for ages 4 to 14. The comprehensive learning modules enrich behaviour management, integrating SMSC, PSHE education, Citizenship, fundamental British values and SEAL. Each lesson plan fosters a growth mindset and positive attitude, building young citizen’s confidence and self-esteem and a “fluency in values” that enhances all aspects of their personal development.

Considered a ‘beacon of light’ in the education sector, the Human Values Foundation’s comprehensive resources engage children, teachers, parent, carers and non-teaching staff so that young people can truly flourish throughout their school careers in all contexts. The positive character traits acquired over time not only help to raise academic and other performance but also improve learners’ wellbeing, happiness and life chances.

To celebrate the first international World Values Day on the 20th October 2016, the Human Values Foundation is inviting children aged from 7 to 11 years to take part in its global story-writing competition. All stories must be submitted by 14th October 2016. Schools and other organisations throughout the world can take part. The stories must be original and centred around one chosen value (a list of values can be found on the HVF website). Each entry should be no more than 300 words long and can be illustrated, though this is not mandatory.

Prizes of book tokens, to a total value of £300, will be awarded for the best eight entries. These will go to the relevant schools or other children’s organisations that made the winning entries. Certificates will also be awarded to all children and schools/organisations in respect of all the entries that are published.

Stories from as many participants as possible will be featured on the WVD and HVF websites so that they can be seen and enjoyed all around the world. They will also be featured on social media platforms and in the HVF’s written and digital publications, including a booklet to be published online early in 2017, which will include a wide cross section of the best stories and illustrations. This ‘Stories On Values - By Children, For Children’ booklet will be available free on the HVF website in PDF format.

“This is a great way to get children creatively thinking about what values are important to them and what they mean!” said Ann Greenwood, former headteacher and founder of The Rainbow Tree Wales.

Those interested in submitting values stories for the World Values Day website and the HVF’s booklet should email [email protected] by Friday 30th September, and give the name of the school/organisation wishing to take part.

Most schools are expected to involve children aged from 7 to 11 in this competition. However, teachers wishing to involve younger children are encouraged to send in copies of their drawings, paintings or posters on the theme of values. These should be no larger than A4 size in order to reproduce well online. The best of these will be published in a similar way to the stories and consideration is being given to awarding a special prize in this category.

All stories must be submitted by 14th October 2016 (see the HVF website for more details on the competition and how to enter).
