Charity ActionAid are offering schools a set of free resources aiming to give literacy lessons an inspiring lift with the help of an incredible, true story. ‘The Children Who Saved Their School’ includes reading, writing, spelling and creative activities, all telling the story of the children who fought to stop their school closing down, and won!

The resources revolve around three homemade videos created by the children at the centre of the campaign. These videos to follow what happened when pupils, parents and teachers joined forces to campaign against the closure of 75 schools in their community in Cholistan, Pakistan. The children play the parts of teachers, media and even an angry policeman as they re-enact their journey from shock, to protest, to victory.

These videos have been packaged with free literacy resources so that teachers can tell this uplifting story in class while focusing on the core curriculum. They have been specially designed resources, and include activities which will encourage pupils to:

Discuss why education is important and why it should be available for all.
Write to persuade, inform and describe through letters, newspaper reports and poetry tasks.
Scan texts for errors to correct.
Think about local and international issues on which they could campaign.

For 25 years, ActionAid has been creating free resources for UK schools on a variety of topics, including refugees, natural disasters and FGM. These resources are crafted with the UK curriculum in mind and use real stories from the people at the centre of change in their own communities.
