Take your STEM learning to new heights

iFLY UK

Indoor skydiving is the simulation of true free-fall conditions in a vertical wind tunnel. It’s where the dream of flight becomes a reality and every flyer has a chance to earn their 'Wings'. Flyers from 3 to 103 years and can experience the thrill of indoor skydiving at iFLY, with sessions specifically designed for Primary and Secondary pupils of all abilities.

If you’re looking for an inspirational and educational school trip, you might not know that vertical wind tunnels provide the perfect opportunity to engage your class in STEM topics with a thrilling, hands-on learning experience!

iFLY’s STEM workshops for Primary and Secondary schools are specially designed to develop pupils’ understanding about the science of flight, before they experience the effects of force on their body first-hand with a one-on-one flying session.

Wind Workshop for Primary Schools

For Primary school pupils aged 5-11, iFLY’s Wind Workshop provides a practical, hands-on session that brings the science of flight to life. The Wind Workshop is led by highly-trained facilitators, specially designed to suit children of all interests and abilities, and recognised by the British Science Association’s CREST Awards.

The Wind Workshop kicks off with a one-hour interactive session with Professor iFLY, who helps pupils answer the question, “why can the instructor stand up whilst you are flying next to them?” Pupils are then taken through interactive demonstrations to show the basics of how a wind tunnel works, before being set interesting and practical challenges that encourage time management, problem solving and teamwork.

Physics of Flight for Secondary Schools

For Secondary school students aged 11-15, iFLY’s Physics of Flight workshop offers a unique opportunity to apply physics theory from the classroom to the live workings of a vertical wind tunnel. Led by highly-trained facilitators, the session covers key curriculum topics such as terminal velocity, aerodynamics, friction and drag.

The session culminates in an unforgettable flying session in a state-of-the-art vertical wind tunnel. As the ideal out-of-classroom learning experience, the result is fresh inspiration and enthusiasm for STEM learning!

What did teachers say?

Caroline Cadoo, class teacher at St John’s Roman Catholic Primary School in Manchester, said:

“iFLY’s Wind Workshop is a fantastic, well-structured and cleverly devised Science investigation. I loved the fact that my pupils were questioned to use existing knowledge to make predictions and to challenge their current understanding of forces. Thank you sincerely for taking the time to plan and host this experience for our pupils. It’s a memory that we’ll all cherish - and it wasn’t only the children who learnt a thing or two!”

Christopher Adams, Maths teacher at Bartholomew School in Oxfordshire, said:

“As an excellent schools’ activity centre, I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending iFLY to other schools and teachers.”

How to get involved

iFLY are the world’s leading operators of indoor skydiving tunnels, with three indoor skydiving locations in the UK: Basingstoke, Manchester and Milton Keynes.

Tickets for the Wind Workshop and Physics of Flight are £29.99 per pupil, including a 45-minute classroom session, a worksheet challenge, two introductory flights, full instruction and classroom briefing, plus flight equipment hire (flight suit, helmet and goggles) and a personal flight certificate for each pupil.

If you’re working to a tighter budget, the Wind Workshop and Physics of Flight ‘Lite’ start from just £14.99 per pupil. This option provides all of the above with one taster flight - equivalent to a real skydive from 12,000 feet - rather than two introductory flights.
