The Class Charts resource was designed to fit in well with Government research that involved outstanding schools, in some of the most deprived areas of England, succeeding with pupil behaviour. Teachers were asked to outline what they felt were the key principles that they had followed for improving behaviour in their schools. Many of them emphasised the simplicity of their approach, but they agreed that most important of all is consistency. Key to improving behaviour school wide is having an effective tracking and monitoring system in place that is easy to use yet provides a detailed insight into behaviour patterns and trends at both group and individual level.
The seating plans in Class Charts immediately impact on behaviour. Teachers are able to tell pupils where to sit, asserting their authority right at the start of the lesson. Another advantage of the seating plans is that they display key data about each pupil (eg SEN, reading age, targets), which helps teachers to differentiate and ensure work is pitched at the correct level.
