The government’s vision is to improve social mobility so that no-one is prevented from fulfilling their potential. As part of their Strategy for Social Mobility, new destination measures are being introduced for Key Stage 4 and 5 students which will focus on their progress after leaving school, college or a training provider.

The new destination measures will ensure that all students:

  • Achieve qualifications which provide them with the best opportunities for their future

  • Receive the help, support and advice necessary to enable them to make choices about their next steps in education, training and/or employment and make successful transitions.

What do the new destination measures mean?

The new measures will track the progress of students and the transitions they make at the age of 16 and 18. It is planned to publish data on students’ outcomes, whether they participate in education, training or employment the year after they leave school. This is how the destination measures will be introduced:

Phase 1: All education destinations and will be published alongside the KS4 and KS5 2011 Performance Tables in 2012.

Phase 2: In 2013, this will include employment and work-based learning destinations.

What are the implications for schools?

Schools’ careers guidance provision will play a crucial role in ensuring that students make informed choices and successful transitions. Students should be equipped with good quality careers guidance and information to support their decisions and help them to choose the best options to suit them. Students will be more likely to progress into positive post-16 and post-18 destinations.

It will be increasingly important for schools to provide high quality support for decision-making and carry out career-related activities that encourage students to explore their different options.

As schools face other changes including the Raising the Participation Age (RPA) and the new statutory duty for schools to deliver careers guidance this September, it puts the need for high quality careers guidance at the top of their priorities.

Not knowing how to achieve your ambitions can be as damaging as not having those ambitions at all. Good careers advice can help young people to increase their confidence, motivation and desire to succeed.”
