Primary schools across England will receive Change4Life and Disney 10 Minute Shake Up teaching packs. Each pupil will receive a 10 Minute Shake Up wall chart to take home to help set up children and their parents for a summer of activity. Over 3.6 million wall charts are being distributed to primary schools this term. This year there are even more interactive Shake Ups than before, including those inspired by the Disney·Pixar film Finding Dory.
Change4Life has developed new PE lesson plans and 10 Minute Shake Up activities to help primary teachers deliver the PE curriculum for Early Years, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. The activities are fun, easy and flexible enough to use in lessons and throughout the day in the classroom, hall or playground.
“We ran lunchtime sessions using the 10 Minute Shake Up activities training pupils how to be young sports leaders,” said Claire Hughes, a PE subject coordinator at Clifton-upon-Teme Primary School. “It helped them make the most out of their lunch hour, providing a positive approach to lunchtimes and play. The children didn’t even realise they were exercising and were happier and more sociable as a result.
“We also decided to use the resource pack at an after school club where children led the activities. It was so successful that we had at least three quarters of the school staying behind to join in!”
In school-aged children, physical activity can lead to better academic achievement, increased attention span, improved behaviour and self-confidence, as well as increased physical health. However, just 21% of boys and 16% of girls currently meet the national recommended level of activity of 60 minutes each day, according to the HSCIC.
Teachers can look out for the 10 Minute Shake Up activities and wall charts, which will be arriving in schools now. To find out more about the 10 Minute Shake Up and how you can receive free wall charts for your pupils, Search Change4Life online or visit the website.
