“Innovative” Runcorn school championed by Ofsted

Innovate My School empowers educators to think beyond traditional boundaries, lead proactively and, most importantly, feel inspired. It now entertains an audience of 50,000 educators through its weekly content, with 1,300 guest bloggers and over 2,500 articles published to date.

Ormiston Bolingbroke Academy (OBA), a school for 11 - 18 year olds situated in Runcorn, has been singled out by Ofsted as a fine example. According to the Liverpool Echo, the Cheshire-based Academy works with “disadvantaged” pupils to bring the best education possible to the area. Ofsted will be sharing their findings of the OBA inspection with schools across the UK.

Founded in 2010, OBA was the first academy to open in Runcorn, and teaches pupils aged 11 - 18. While the school specialises in teaching English and Applied Learning, Ofsted were particularly impressed with OBA’s Philosophy 4 Children enquiry-based classroom approach to learning.

“Overall, I am delighted that the students and staff at OBA have been able to help the Ofsted team with this important report,” said OBA principal Mark Wyss. “We are very proud of what we do for every single student in our care and hopefully sharing some of our best practice with other schools across the country will help them to raise the achievement of their disadvantaged students to similar heights. We are also excited about supporting Ofsted further with this project.”

An Ofsted spokesperson: “Most secondary schools have a transition programme. However, what is different at OBA is the importance attached to the programme, with the consequent time and investment in ensuring that it is successful.

“The primary pupils gain from specialist teaching, in areas of the curriculum such as PE, music, cookery, science, and teachers value the sharing of good practice. OBA gains a greater understanding of the needs of the pupils.”
