Mayor of London supports WOW Talks' mission to inspire tomorrow’s Women In Tech

Global creativity-events organisation WOW Talks are encouraging schools to get their female students involved with ‘WOW Talks // Women in Tech’. Taking place at London’s Royal Geographical Society on Tuesday 20th September, this free event will expose learners to some of the most exciting careers of the future by bringing together inspiring female tech entrepreneurs and trailblazers. The speakers will share their very personal stories of what inspired them to pursue a career in tech, how they got to where they are today, the challenges they faced on the way and their WOW (Words of Wisdom), all in seven minute sessions. As is standard for WOW Talks, there will also be entertaining live performances intertwined throughout.

The event, which is hosted in partnership with NextTechGirls, Acorn Aspirations, TLAWomen in Tech, TechUK and Apps for Good, as well as being supported by the Mayor of London, will take place from 12 - 5pm at the prestigious Royal Geographical Society in Kensington, located near the Science and Natural History museums.

"At WOW Talks, our mission is to inspire young people to connect with they purpose - their WHY - and pursue careers they feel passionate about,” said CEO Kim Arazi. “As we feel strongly about encouraging more girls to go into tech, we are delighted to offer Secondary schools the opportunity to attend our very first Women in Tech event, which aims to change girls' perceptions about technology (and STEM). Students need to know that tech isn't just an industry for Maths and Science geniuses; it is simply a tool they can use to create anything they want.

“We want to expose the students to the exciting variety of jobs and careers that fall under the 'tech' umbrella, and inspire them to embrace the world of technology rather than shy away from it."

In addition to the talks and performances on the main stage, the event will also offer two hours of workshops (eg ‘Introduction to the Internet of Things’) interactive demos, the chance to learn about work experience placements and further education in tech, and the opportunity to network with some of the leading female executives and entrepreneurs in London’s tech scene.

Each Secondary school that applies will be allocated up to 20 tickets. It is up to the school to decide which students to bring along, but WOW Talks recommend inviting female students who are not currently on a STEM or tech track, as this event is designed to inspire and get them interested in tech.

The first schools to register will also have the opportunity to have their students participate in #AcornHackWOW - a two-day girls’ hackathon taking place 24th - 25th September at Entrepreneur First, in collaboration with Acorn Aspirations. During this weekend, students will get the chance to collaborate with well-known female developers and entrepreneurs from the TechCity community to develop apps and platforms that could transform the world around them.
