The betty bus hits the road!

betty for schools is a curriculum-linked period education programme. It has been created for teachers of 8-12 year olds to encourage open, respectful and honest conversations about periods and the way they affect girls. The resources are suitable for PSHE lessons and are fully accredited by the PSHE Association’s Quality Assurance Mark. Film-led, with a mix of animations, quizzes and interactive activities, the resources have been created with education experts and young people, to empower teachers to deliver sessions with confidence.

The team at betty for schools turned the Telegraph Festival of Education 2017 pink when they arrived at Wellington College in the bright pink and yellow betty bus to highlight period education.

betty for schools is a free, PSHE curriculum-linked period education programme for teachers of 8-12 year olds, and aims to create a generation of both boys and girls who feel truly at ease talking about periods.

The betty for schools team of facilitators, who run the period education sessions in schools, welcomed festival-goers to the bus, from groups of students to journalists, to share how betty educates children about periods. On the Friday, the betty team hosted a panel discussion to highlight the key issues that currently affect girls about periods, as well as demonstrating the impact betty is having on schools in the UK.

The betty bus makes visits all over the UK, where the trained facilitators deliver a free, PSHE curriculum-linked period education programme in the form of immersive, one hour sessions. These sessions are designed to help girls understand what happens to their bodies as they grow up and how to deal with their periods and the roller-coaster of emotions that comes with them. Whilst the girls are in their session, the boys get to experience a separate workshop of their own, focusing on empathy and developing an understanding of what girls’ experience during their period, and how to support them.

The online interactive resources have been designed by the teenage brand betty, together with education experts and young people, to encourage open and honest conversations about periods and the way they affect girls.

Becky Hipkiss, education manager at betty for schools, said: “The Telegraph Festival of Education was a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase betty for schools, and of course, the betty bus, and talk about the period education programme we deliver. We are taking requests for schools visits up and down the country and working hard to spread the betty message to empower both boys and girls to feel comfortable talking about periods.”
