I Can Lead aims to build 14-19-year-olds’ leadership skills through physical activity and volunteering experiences, using a format that is easy for teachers to implement and manage. It is designed to be fun and practical, with a focus on personal development, not just sporting ability. It is flexible enough to be delivered in class, on the sports field or as an after-school activity.
“Implementing the courses is easy and doesn’t consume a lot of my time,” said Fiona Sullivan, a PE Teacher at St Mungo’s Academy in Glasgow. “All students who embark on the leadership pathway enjoy the lessons and quickly develop important life skills.”
From now until the end of June, teachers who sign up 20 students could win an I Can Lead Pack that contains 20 limited edition branded watches and an exclusive polo shirt. There are five packs to be won, and this offer ends 30th June 2015.
Offering a practical approach to learning, I Can Lead is fully linked to the Key Stage 4 PE curriculum and 4th Level PE outcomes of the Curriculum for Excellence. It has been reviewed and developed with the help of teachers to ensure it is easy to manage and integrate as part of a lesson plan or as an afterschool activity. The programme delivers an award that will be recognised on student CVs and records of achievement.
Sports Leaders UK’s initiative focuses on personal development and not sporting ability, looking to boost academic performance by improving students behaviour, confidence and life skills. It complements leadership activities in which students are already taking part on the sports field, in class or through extracurricular activities.
