The British Army has launched new Wellness and Mental Health resources for young people aged 11-16, which schools can use free-of-charge. These digital resources for Key Stages 3 and 4 focus on four topics: Coping with Stress, Managing Change, Healthy Minds and Support Networks.

With downloadable lesson plans and worksheets available for each topic, the resources are designed to help support students at this key stage in their development, providing them with the tools and skills they need to best manage their own physical and mental wellbeing. All resources provide guidance for teachers on teaching mental health and wellbeing, and each resource includes an engaging film that helps students explore key issues that link to the PSHE curriculum.

Coping With Stress

Through these resources, students will learn about the signs of stress, what is happening in their brains during times of stress, and coping mechanisms to help manage times of stress. The resources explore the signs of stress and how it can affect us both physically and mentally. The lesson plans provide discussion questions to help facilitate classroom discussions on what strategies are best to prepare and deal with stress, both inside and out of the classroom.

Managing Change

Managing change has become an extremely important skill as we all learn to adapt and change significant parts of our daily lives during the COVID-19 pandemic. In these resources, students will learn about the changes that might happen in someone’s life, discover strategies for managing change, and explore the opportunities and challenges that could come with change. The resources provide support on what types of feelings come with change and discusses which strategies can help to manage change.

Healthy Minds

In the Healthy Minds resources, students will learn about the connection between their bodies and minds; explore the impact of food choices, sleep and physical activity on mental wellbeing; and consider strategies to make positive changes in these areas. The resources further explore the body-mind connection and how making positive changes can help students to maintain a healthy mind. Also included is a quiz that provides questions to encourage students to explore their own personal reflection.

Support Networks

Support networks are made up of the people in someone’s life who help them and provide support. In these resources, students will learn about why support networks are important, discover the different types of support networks and explore some of the barriers to seeking support, as well as ways to overcome these barriers. In the lesson, students can learn about the different types of support including motivational support, companionship, emotional support and practical support.
